I seem to be developing a tendency to give mental diminutive nicknames to random people. Like the guy who teaches my intro to law class- he looks like he's about 14, and I realized this morning I was mentally calling him BabyLawProf, because I can't remember his real name.

The transition between dreams and reality is always a difficult one, every morning. But today's was particularly jarring. That was a nice, idyllic dream, and it was a harsh return. It just starts the day on a very melancholy note.

Vote for Avery!

Originally posted by emmagrant01 at Vote for Avery!
Some radio station in Alberta, Canada is having a contest called "Breast Summer Ever", in which they're giving away a boob job to the candidate with the most votes. Yeah, I know. BUT. BUT!!

One of the finalists is a transwoman named Avery. She's gotten a strong following online and made it to the finals, and has a serious chance of winning this contest. This surgery could literally change her life. She has an awesome video on the site explaining why having breasts would mean so much to her.

GO VOTE FOR AVERY!!! Voting is open until July 17. I can't tell if multiple votes count or not, but who knows?

Pass it on!

Title: Shadows on the Shire
Fandom or Original Universe: Middle Earth
Rating: PG-13
Word count: 1,944
Prompt: January OYTAWL Challenge
Summary: A hobbit returns to the Shire, but dangers seem to have followed him. Set roughly 60 years after the fall of Sauron. (This started out as a spin-off from a random bit of in-game monologue in Lord of the Rings Online. My brain started to combine Lord of the Rings with the influences of the noir novel I was reading at the time, and it ended up with a very different view of Middle Earth.)

I'm just feeling so angsty and emo right now, that I think it's too much for even Livejournal right now. It's just frustrating on numerous levels.

But I don't feel like inflicting it on anyone else is going to help at all, other than make me just feel dumb. So, instead: Tell me something good. Something funny, some good news, whatever. Just make my day better.

Apparently one of the guys in my English class has no idea what my name is, so he's apparently just started calling me Laptop, because I have a tendency to not bring in my book and just look up the story we're discussing online. (You can't CTL-F to find something in a book.)

This led to a discussion at lunch today about how I now am to be referred to as Kishi Laptop, Esq. Indeed.

I had something else I was going to ramble on about here, but it doesn't seem like it was so important that my brain bothered to remember it.

Scene: Last night, out in a club. Standing at the bar, Morgan and Kay are waiting for the bartender to order drinks, while I stand behind them. To our left, a DRUNK MAN is talking very emphatically to the woman he's there with. As there is a momentary lull in the music, the drunk man proclaims to his friend:

DRUNK MAN: I would totally bang you!

The music remains low for a moment, as I can't help but make eye contact with the drunk man and his companion. He looks back at me, and then:

DRUNK MAN: (To me) And I would bang you too. You know, if you were into that.

Thanks, drunk man. A dude likes to feel appreciated, even if he isn't into that.

*******

Last night was interesting. Kind of weird, kind of disappointing. Once again it was established that the clubs and fetish events in Phoenix are sadly not up to the standards of what we saw in Utah, and honestly it's depressing to realize that we were spoiled by Utah. By Utah. Yeah. Plus, if you're going to bother having DJs playing- and good ones at that- why wouldn't you have more room for dancing? And one of the pamphlets for a group that seemed vaguely interesting had a quote that I'm fairly certain could be traced back to an individual in Phoenix that we've been working to avoid, so eh. But there were some very nice outfits to look at, and some friendly people, and it was nice hanging out, so yeah.

Anyway, I really need to go teach myself the chapter of German that I missed out on while I was sick, and there's a Super Bowl I'm probably going to be not paying attention to, so I should get busy on all that.

Lessons learned from shopping for a mattress- when you give someone several hundred dollars, they will afterward call you sir. Also, Morgan is ridiculously perky after a good night's sleep. It's cute.

First day of the semester today, which went fairly well. I've got two classes Tuesday/Thursday that are actually taught by the same professor, so that works out pretty well. He seems pretty nice, obviously enjoys speaking, so hopefully it'll be good. First is a political science class, which I'm looking forward to, and then an Econ class, which could be good, we'll see.

And for as much as I resisted getting the iPod Touch, I am swiftly becoming very fond of mine. And by "very fond of" I mean "ridiculously attached and dependent on".

Due to what will probably later be considered a tremendous collapse of reason and a failure of all those anti-peer pressure classes I had to take in elementary school, I have apparently decided to set a writing goal for myself this year. 100,000 words. On a coherent topic. Yeah. We'll see how this goes. I have a general idea, I'll just have to see how long I can keep the focus.

Happy MLK Day, all, even if you're celebrating it by going to watch the whitest of sports. In theory I'm going out to buy a bed, but- stop me if you've heard this one before- we're stuck at home right now watching one of the kids. Fantastic. And I seem to have missed the rain so far, so I'm just a little grumpy in general.

Have I mentioned lately that I <3 my internet nerds?

It feels weird not to have a Thirty Days thing to update. But, I spent the evening hanging out with cinderlily, her husband, and various folks. It was awesome. We talked about all sorts of random nerdy crap, including Felicia Day, Abraham Lincoln, and if things were photoshopped, plus a guest appearance via Skype by littlebuttercup. It was a whole lot of nerdy fun, and then we ended up playing Lego Rock Band. I decided I'm going solo, but we'll see if the band gets reunited after I realize my sub-par skills as a bass player aren't enough for a career.

Oh, and littlebuttercup got me glasses from Powells. Which are awesome. <3

So, what's up?

Play it cool, maybe no one will notice you haven't posted an actual post in roughly three months. It's okay. Just don't type something pointing it out. Crap! Wait, if it's in italics, it's internal monologue, right? They can't read this. Okay, we're still good.

So, how's it going? Yeah? How'd that thing work out for you? Oh, awesome. Apply enthusiasm or sarcasm as appropriate Just what you were hoping for. Ditto. So, how's the choose as appropriate: family/kids/boyfriend/girlfriend/parole officer/computer/pet rock doing?

Okay, yeah, that's as far as I'm willing to take that. So, yeah, how's things? Things are okay here. Getting ready to go back to school- a topic on which I got some fantastic news a few days back, when I logged into my account for the college and found out that not only was I going to get some grants to help, they'd decided to give me the full amount that the Pell Grant allows. Which, since there was some concern about how I'd be paying for classes and all, that was a tremendous load of stress off my shoulders. Thank you, US taxpayers- your funding will not be squandered. Much. (If at all- Morgan tells me I can't take the money to Vegas, despite my promises that we'd triple it. Seriously, I've got a system.) Yeah, so the beauty of that is that it'll take care of my tuition, my books, and leave me some to buy a new laptop, since this one is dying a slow, tragic death. I'm taking a class next month, and then fall semester starts in August. Yay. I'm actually looking forward to it- if for no other reason than the fact I'm kind of bored and unfocused right now. And the fact that my sister-in-law and her hyperactive 16 month-old son are staying here right now, and will be for the next couple of months, at least, means I'm looking forward to having a reason to be out of the house.

Uh, other than that. Running D&D for some people- we're rotating DMs every month or so, and my last session is on Friday. This party is very, very, very unfocused, which can be fun at times, but means I'm not progressing through the plot as quickly as planned. So, instead of finishing the story, as I expected, I figured out an appropriate cliff-hanger. Also been playing Star Wars. It's the new edition, which sucks, and the guy running it... Well, let's just say I don't agree with his style sometimes. But the people playing are cool, so we have some fun. We've got two campaigns, actually- one psuedo-Jedi, where I'm playing a noble who's basically building his own Force tradition as we help the Empire fight the Vong, and one Sith, where I'm a somewhat unbalanced Zeltron mercenary. I like playing my Jedi, but part of the joy of my merc is that A) I'm one of the two non-Force users in the party, and B) the other non-Force user is a bounty hunter played by an old friend from high school/college, and lots of time gaming together means we're pretty good at playing off each other's characters. Plus Morgan's playing a Sith- she described her character concept as "I want to dual wield light sabers and wear tight black leather." The GM originally thought she was kidding. It's pretty fun party, and eventually someone's going to kill off another member, I'm sure.

Okay, gotta go pick up Morgan from work, I'll add on to this later.

Argh

So, yeah. Nice day. Lunch with Morgan, baseball game, my older sister went into labor with her second son, just generally fun and relaxing. Then I get home.

Nothing like a letter from the IRS saying you owe them $2000 to really screw up a good mood. It looks like Morgan's school fucked up and reported her loans and grants as income, so the government wants us to pay taxes on it. Which we shouldn't have to do. But I've still felt like I'm about to throw up since I opened the letter. $2000 is not money that we have sitting around. And since they fucked it up last year, I'm pretty sure they fucked it up this year, too, so I'm going to get another letter like this in about 12 months, even after we get this fixed. Well, at least next year, I'll have dealt with it before.

Given the mindset this put me in, I decided to put up at least one pretty thing. Bethy, in response to your request...

Picture memeage

So, yeah. I've found myself lately really curious about photography. Granted, it's an expensive hobby I can't even consider affording to get into, but it's still cool. Given that, I found myself kind of curious to play with this meme:

Ask me to take a picture of any aspect of my life that you're interested in. Leave your choice here as a comment, and I will reciprocate by taking the pictures and posting them as an LJ entry. That way you get to know a little bit about my life, if you're interested in it.

Note: I reserve the right to reject any request for photos of things that I'd be uncomfortable posting to the internet.

So, yeah. Give me something interesting, and I will make an attempt, with the help of the digital camera, to comply.
